Nellie L. (Bailey) Tobias, 77, of Hammondsport, NY passed away peacefully on Friday, December 23, 2016 after a brief illness.

Nellie was the youngest child of Walter and Hazel (Chase) Bailey.  She was born on May 2, 1939 in Urbana, NY and she grew up on Bully Hill in Hammondsport, NY amongst her siblings and many different animals including favorite horse Lucky.

Nellie married the love of her life, Max R. Tobias of Savona, on November 30, 1957.  Being a family woman, They built a home on Bully Hill where they raised 5 children, Max.(Vickie) Tobias, Mark (Rhonda) Tobias of Bath, Matt Tobias of Hammondsport, Teresa Tobias of Bath, and Trina (Jered) Fletcher of Pulteney.

Through the years, Nellie had many places of employment. She had many memorable times at Taylor Wine Company and Great Western working the bottling rooms, and especially the years of the press gang late night shenanigans.  She was also employed at the Bully Hill, Ira Davenport Hospital, Taylor Health Center, and various others.

She is survived by her children and brother; Ted Bailey of Bath, NY, 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Nellie was preceded by her husband and parents, brothers; Chuck, Jim, and Bill Bailey, sisters; Minnie Turner-Stanley and Mary Erway.

Nellie was best known as Nell, Aunt Nellie, Mom, Grandma, and Gigi.  She was so proud of all of her children.   She loved every one of her grandchildren whom she affectionately called her “puppies”, and she wouldn’t hesitate to tell you every one of them was her favorite.  She was always saying “they are all beautiful.”

Beside being with her family and helping everyone, Nellie also loved telling stories, playing cards, reading paperback books, doing cross word puzzles, hitting garage sales, getting the best bargains at the S & A Boutique, and of course telling stories again.

She was quite the special lady, the best Mother, Grandmother, and, Gigi anyone could ask for, she was an inspiration to all. Her legacy of love and adoration of her children will live on forever through her grandchildren and their children.

Nellie asked there be no calling hours or services.  Burial will be at the Bath VA cemetery at the family’s convenience.

Her wish was to have a celebration of her life where all her family and friends would get together.  This was held on Friday December 30 at the Hammondsport American Legion at 4:00pm.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Finger Lakes SPCA, 72 Cameron St, Bath, NY 14810, or any organization of choice.

Arrangements are by the LaMarche Funeral Home of Hammondsport, New York.
