John Patrick McRae passed away at his home in Kissimmee, Florida on Monday (May 9, 2017). He was 65 years young.

KISSIMMEE, Fla./AVOCA - John Patrick McRae passed away at his home in Kissimmee, Florida on Monday (May 9, 2017).  He was 65 years young.

John was born in Bath to Leonard and Alberta McRae. He attended Avoca Central High School and continued his education at Corning Community College, Murray State University in Kentucky, and the University of Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg.  He received an Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees respectively.

John was married to Jacqueline Guerette of Bath on the 6th of October in Hammondsport.  They were happily married for over 30 years.

John was retired at the time of his passing. He served the Department of Defense as an Army civilian for 30 years and was passionate about taking care of soldiers.  His service was focused on the soldiers and their families. He was a Chief of Recreation Services and spent time in Germany and the Middle East. He spent the last 14 years of his career in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait making sure the men and women who were deployed to serve in this part of the world had diverse recreational opportunities during their off-duty hours. He spent much of his own off duty hours coaching softball and leading camping trips into the desert to search for historical artifacts.

As a retiree he enjoyed researching the family genealogy and stirring up trouble debating the Irish/Scottish connection with his family.  He also enjoyed computer war gaming and debating politics.

John is survived by his wife, Jackie; his brothers, Daniel and David; his nieces Samantha and Kelsey and their children.  He is also survived by many friends who he considered to be part of his family.

A memorial service will be held for John at the American Legion in Avoca on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
