Betty R. White, 91, passed away on August 9, 2017 at the Fred and Harriet Taylor Nursing Home in Hammondsport, NY.
Betty R. White, 91, passed away on August 9, 2017 at the Fred and Harriet Taylor Nursing Home in Hammondsport, NY. She was born on April 30, 1926, in Corning, NY to Theodore and Ida (Bayer) Hilt. She married Frederick C. White of Corning on August 23, 1952 in Corning and would have celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary in a few weeks.
Betty attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, Corning Free Academy (CFA Class of ’43), and then the New York State College for Teachers in Albany. She also was awarded a Masters of Speech and Drama from Cornell University.
Betty was a professor emeritus of Corning Community College where she taught writing, journalism, literature, and media analysis. She also was the faculty advisor for the college newspaper, the Crier. Prior to teaching at CCC, she also taught English at Painted Post High School as well as Middleport High School. She also directed senior plays at both schools.
Betty had the honor of being a past president of the Corning Area Retired Teachers Association, past president of Beta Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society of key women educators, as well as past president and member emeritus of the Corning Clionian Circle.
During her retirement, Betty participated in many volunteer organizations such as the Literacy Volunteer Board, Hammondsport Public Library Board, and the Loaves and Fishes Pantry Board. She had been an active volunteer with St. Gabriel’s Church in Hammondsport, which is now part of St. John Vianney Parish. She is survived by her husband, Frederick White; her four children, Theodore/Ted White (Dennis), Carol White Adamczak (Stephen), Larry White (Irena), and Ellen White; five grandchildren, Daniel (Ashley), Kateri, and Nathan Adamczak, and Christina and Michael White. She also was the proud great-grandmother of Nolan and Elias Adamczak. There are no calling hours, but friends may join her family for a memorial mass which will be celebrated on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 10:00AM at St. Gabriel’s Church, 78 Shethar St in Hammondsport.
