Richard Schied, 66, of Bradford, NY, died suddenly at home on May 2nd.

Richard Schied, 66, of Bradford, NY, died suddenly at home on May 2nd.

Richard was known and admired in several circles.  He led the Presbyterian churches of Weston and Hammondsport, and was actively involved in church administration at the time of his death.  He also served as Tourism Ambassador for the Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce, where he was regarded for his knowledge of local history and wineries.  Richard retired from 30 years of teaching at Watkins Glen Middle School and served various roles within NYS United Teachers.  Others knew him from time spent as a winery tasting room staffer, an R.I.T. security guard, and a magazine columnist.  A dramatic studies minor, Richard supported multiple area theaters.

He is survived by his wife, three children, four siblings, and extended family.  The family is grateful to Richard’s many friends, colleagues, and parishioners for their
support.

Calling hours were held May 6, from 5-7pm at Weston Presbyterian Church, with a memorial service held May 8 at 4pm at First Presbyterian Church of Hammondsport.  In lieu of flowers, please follow Richard’s example with contributions to Fair Trade (fairtrade
certified.org/donate), the Clemens Center (P.O. Box 1046 Elmira, NY 14902), or the Diaper Depot Outreach of the First Presbyterian Church (P.O. Box 246 Hammondsport, NY 14840).

Arrangements are by the LaMarche Funeral Home of Hammondsport.
