James A. Gilbert, Jr., 72, passed away unexpectedly, July 18 in his Campbell home.
He was born to James and Violet (Beebe) Gilbert Sr. in Bath, NY on Feb. 28, 1938.
Originally from the Hammondsport and Bath area he worked at the Bath V.A. Center as a diabetics worker, he also worked as a mechanic at Perry-Thompson Ford garage for 22 years and Kmart (Penske) Corp. in Bath for 13 years. He also was a babysitter “Grandpa” for numerous families in the area for many years.
He met and then married his wife Catherine (Kate) Gilbert, March 11, 1957 and they were married 53 years. Whom he was predeceased by on June 11, 2010.
He is survived by his two sons, James E. (Kathryn) Gilbert and Michael A. (Tammy) Gilbert both of Bath; two daughters, Connie A. Wilcox of Bath and Christina (Larry) Harris of Campbell; his nine grandchildren, Katrina (Beau Clinton) Wheeler of Geneseo, Michael (Stacey) Gilbert Jr. of California, Tyler (Kyia) Gilbert, Kristal (Joey) Washburn of Bath, Jessica (Dan Renwand) Wilcox of Corning, Kasey (Bruce) Wheaton and Arthur Gilbert; step grandchildren, John and Tasha Harahus of Bath; nine great grandchildren, Natalie and Mason Washburn, Chloe Gilbert, Kayla Clinton, Brandon and Gabrielle Wheaton, Jaeda Harahus and Jonathan Putnam, and Keagan James Wilcox; two brothers, Robert (Betty) Gilbert of Cameron Mills and Kenneth (Betty) Gilbert of Bath; his six sisters, Doris (Norris) Robinson, Virginia Lyon, Irene Applebee, Beverly Stafford of Bath, Peggy Brewer of Hammondsport and Sharon Bochl of Darling, Texas; his wonderful step mother, Anna Lynk of Bath; several brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, and nephews, and great nieces and nephews and several wonderful friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, James and Violet (Beebe) Gilbert Sr.; his brothers, Edward (Jenny) Gilbert and Larry Gilbert; and sister, Bernice (Jim) (Gilbert) Brady.
Calling hours were held from 2-3 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at the Bond-Davis Funeral Home, 107 East Steuben Street, Bath, with the funeral service immediately following. A dinner in his memory was held at 4 p.m. the Bath Fire Department, 50 East Morris St., Bath. There will be no graveside services at this time.
