Hazel D. Pruyn, age 103, of Bath, NY, died Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the Steuben County Health Care Facility. She was born September 23, 1909 in Yonkers, NY, Hazel Elizabeth Dykes, the youngest of seven children. Her father died when she was six months old and she was raised by her single widowed mother. She married John I. Pruyn in 1938 and he passed away in 1973. He was a Nuclear Power Plant Control Board Operator and Instructor for Consolidated Edison in Buchanan, NY.
Mrs. Pruyn was employed as a secretary for Consolidated Edison Power Co. and Phelps Dodge Wire Co. during WW II as a Quality Control Inspector.
Her daughter Diane was born January 10, 1943 in Bronxville, NY. In 1943, Hazel’s husband John was shipped to Pacific Theatre in US Army Signal Corp, returning in 1946. Her son Gary was born June 5, 1947 in Yonkers, NY.
She was a resident of Yonkers, NY until 1960, then Peekskill, NY until 1976 moving to Florida until 2004. Hazel relocated to Steuben County in mid-2004 and has lived there since.
She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Robert) Freer of Latham, NY; son, Gary S.(Elaine) Pruyn of Hammondsport, NY; four grandchildren, Heather (Ray) Kurut of Chicago, IL, Brian (Tracy) Freer of Watervliet, NY, Katherine (Lt. Jonathan) Dieter of Naples, Italy and John Pruyn of Albany, NY; three great grandchildren, Brandon Freer, Emily Freer and Grayson Dieter; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial calling hours and services will be from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, November 20 with services at 6 p.m. at Fagan’s Funeral Home in Bath with Reverend Paul Rowley officiating.
Burial will be in the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Sandy Relief Fund American Red Cross, P.O. Box 4002018, Des Moines, IA 50340-2018 or Hammondsport United Methodist Church, 35 Lake Street, Hammondsport, NY 14840.
