Silas James Sheerer, Jr., age 76, of Painted Post, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010 in Elmira at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Silas was born on March 18, 1934 in Vandling, PA, the son of the late Silas J. and the late Bernice (Nelson) Sheerer. He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy L. Smith, in 1984.
Silas served aboard the U.S.S. Chester T. O’Brien (DE 421) during the Korean War as an electrician’s mate. After returning from service, he worked with NYSEG as a lineman for 37 years, retiring in 1994. Silas was a life member of VFW Post 524, and the Masonic Lodge in Corning, the National Rifle Association, and the American Legion. He was also an avid outdoorsman.
Silas is survived by two sons, Silas (Shelly Morse) Sheerer, III of Thurston and Paul (Jacquelyn) Sheerer of Cameron; one daughter, Sandra (Robert Paisley) Sheerer of Corning; four grandchildren; and three sisters.
A funeral service honoring Silas’ life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9 at Bath National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Thurston Christian Church, 7511 Route 333, Thurston, NY, 14619. Arrangements are with Carpenter’s Funeral Home, LLC 14 East Pulteney Street in Corning.
