To the Editor,
As we enjoy our driving privilege along our village, town, county and state highways, we should be cognizant of highway work zones.
These entail mowing, repairs and full reconstruction of highways, bridges and interstate medians. It takes on average 60 seconds to drive through a work zone and in those 60 seconds a family’s life can be forever shattered when someone ignores the signs, workers and equipment.
Imagine working every day in a job that is extremely dangerous. People who are employed in highway related jobs put their lives at risk daily.
Excessive speeds in these zones cause maiming injuries and fatalities. Not slowing down only saves on average ten seconds of travel time.
Watch for work zone, mowing and survey crew signs. Be aware of the brush cutting and ditch digging on your town roads. The orange cones and barrels are there for a reason.
Remember to plan your travel time for construction delays. If the workers are not present but the signs are up, it is still a work zone with hazards. The lower speed is not there for punishment. It is there for a reason.
Those outside workers also have families who love them. They too want to be able to enjoy life to the fullest.
The Steuben County Traffic Safety Board wants everyone to have safe travels on all of our 3149 miles of highways. You have better things to do than be seeing the judge in traffic court. Have a great summer!
