Recently, healthcare reform legislation has been at the forefront of the nation’s attention. I am writing to inform the community about proactive solutions that can be taken to maintain a healthier New York.
There are a variety of New York State initiatives that have reduced smoking rates effectively.
They are available locally and free of charge to any resident. If you smoke and want to quit, there are several resources available in the community.
These include counselors at the New York State Quitline, 1*866-NY-QUITS or online at www.nysmokefree.com. Over the phone, there are counselors who will provide you with support, and even supplies to help you quit smoking.
There is also a cessation center located at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center where you can go on site and meet with counselors or attend groups. These educators are knowledgeable about issues unique to people who smoke.
The cessation center can be reached at 737-4463. Do it for yourself, and your family. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides and murders com
bined.” The cessation center and the Quitline are community resources anyone can use for a healthier New York.
