At the special Town Board meeting held on Tuesday March 2, there were several accusations made about lies, shady goings on, and meetings being changed. As a board member, I am surprised and somewhat offended by these accusations. I am honest and open and while I may have differences of opinion with people, I still respect them and try to understand where they are coming from. I trust the same is true for the other members of the board. If my constituents have questions, I encourage them to talk to me in person. I’m sure Supervisor Wordingham would welcome people into his office to discuss issues as well.
As I think about Tuesday night’s meeting, I can’t help but compare it to another special meeting we had last month at which we discussed a water project that could cost the water district nearly $1 million dollars. Although this project is not controversial at all, it has some similarities to the wind project. It deals with health and safety issues, it doesn’t affect the entire town directly, and it could potentially cost a lot of money. There was only one person in attendance at this meeting who could be directly affected. I certainly understand people’s concern about tax increases. What I don’t understand is why no one else in the water district was at this meeting. The project involves an amount of money 10 times what was discussed at Tuesday’s meeting, to potentially be paid for by approximately one quarter of the taxpayers. Since the current town board IS concerned about people’s taxes AND fiscal responsibility, we spent nearly 3 hours that night discussing funding options and grant possibilities for this project.
Contrary to what some people believe, I did listen to everyone who spoke at Tuesday night’s meeting. Many people voiced concern about tax increases. At the meeting, $22 thousand in donations was promised, with the possibility of more coming. My hope is that we can move forward and protect our citizen’s health and safety with very little, if any, impact on our taxes.
