NICHOLS - Matt Stonie proved he was a 'mudder' with his eating effort in a driving rain at Tioga Downs Casino Resort Saturday night.

Stonie defended his World Chicken Spiedie eating title by downing 25.5 1/2-pound sandwiches in 10 minutes in the middle of a heavy downpour. The championship contest was sponsored by Lupo's.

Stonie broke the world record he set in 2016 when he consumed 20 spiedie sandwiches.

His extra effort was necessary, as the world's top-ranked eater Joey Chestnut and Carmen Cincotti tied for second place by eating 23.5 spiedies apiece.

Chestnut, who was the winner in 2015, was disappointed with second place.

"I'm going to go to work on Monday to figure out what I'm going to have to do to not lose three years in a row," Chestnut said.

Dark skies were looming when the 10-minute contest began Saturday, but the clouds opened up soon after the eating began - bringing large, heavy rain drops.

About three minutes in, some lighting and thunder were heard, but the eaters continued.

Geoffrey Esper tied last year's world record with 20 sandwiches to finish fourth.
