ELMIRA - In a rematch of last year's Section 4 class AA championship game, Binghamton edged Elmira 33-32 on Saturday at Ernie Davis Academy's Marty Harrigan Field.
Senior quarterback Daniel Crowley connected to Jaylin Ragsdale on an 8-yard touchdown pass as time expired, overcoming a 20-point deficit with four minutes remaining.
After Crowley one-yard run in the fourth quarter, the Patriots found themselves trailing 32-20. After a kickoff return by Elmira, the Patriots jumped on an Express fumble the ensuing play and marched down the field with a 5-play drive that ended with a Crowley score that cut the Elmira lead to 32-27.
Elmira got the ball back with 2:58 remaining in the game, and drew the Patriots offside on a fourth-and-five with 2:13 to go in the game. Binghamton's defense held strong however, as it stopped the Elmira running attack the next three downs that had been lethal all day to force a punt with 50 seconds left.
Starting from the 50-yard line, After an incomplete pass on first down, Ragsdale made a diving grab for a 27-yard gain to put the Patriots inside the 20-yard line of the Express. Connor Ackerson made an 11-yard snag on a throw from Crowley that set up the final play with only three seconds remaining.
Crowley completed 13 of 28 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns, with both touchdowns going to Ragsdale. Crowley also ran for three touchdowns on the ground.
The first half was all Elmira with running back Airihk Ashley darting all over the Binghamton defense, ripping off runs of 65 and 54 in the first quarter, finishing with 275 yards on 24 carries. Ashley recorded the lone touchdown of the third quarter on a 5-yard run that put the Express up 24-6 at the end of the third quarter.
Elmira falls to 1-4 with the loss and 1-1 in Section 4 and will travel to Ithaca next Friday at 7 p.m.
