BRADFORD - The Braves rode an 8-0 third quarter to a 46-35 win over Hammondsport in the opening round of the Bradford Tip-Off Tournament Friday.

The two teams battled to a 27-27 draw at halftime before Bradford’s defense turned up the heat.

“Our goal was to take away Parker Watson in the second half and keep the ball away from him,” Bradford head coach Mark LaBarr said. “Once we accomplished that, the turnovers started flowing and we were able to convert in transition.”

Nick Bailey led the Braves (1-0) with 11 points - seven of which were netted in the first half. Teammate Steven Spina was next with 10 points - including a pair of threes in the first half.

Joey Miller scored all eight of his points in the first half, as well.

Bailey and Ben Lucas netted four points apiece in the fourth quarter.

Hammondsport (0-1) was led by 11 points from Watson, who scored four points in the first quarter and five in the second.

Cameron Roote tallied all eight of his points in the first half for the Lakers. Luke Atkinson finished the game with five points.

The Braves will take on Avoca at 7 p.m. tonight in the title game.

Avoca 61, Alfred-Almond 23

BRADFORD - LaDre Stanford netted 33 points as Avoca opened its basketball season with a 61-23 win over Alfred-Almond at the Bradford Tip-Off Tournament Friday.

Stanford added eight rebounds and six steals to his line.

The Tigers, who led 34-9 at halftime, also got an 11-point, 14-rebound double-double from Evan Reppert.

"For the first game of the year - our intensity was in mid-season form," Avoca head coach Mike Stowe said. 

Alfred-Almond was led by six points from Matt Ingalls.

Girls Basketball

Twin Tiers 31, Bradford 25

BRADFORD - Led by 12 points from Kiley Easton, Twin Tiers Christian Academy downed Bradford 31-25 at the Bradford Tip-Off Tournament Friday.

Twin Tiers also got six points from Abby Ayers and four points from Mackenzie Mosher.

Bradford was led by 10 points from Emily Wagner and seven points from Brittany Rinker. Jillian Underhill added six boards for the Braves, who will play in the consolation round today.
