ELMIRA - Elmira Notre Dame erased a 13 point deficit at halftime to top Newark 58-51 on Thursday in the Regional Division 2 Semifinal of the Josh Palmer Tournament.
Newark took control in the first half, leading 35-22 with the Crusaders shooting 7-29 in the first half.
“I thought we were taking good shot in the first half, they just weren’t falling,” Elmira Notre Dame head coach Bill Hopkins said. “If our shot selection was poor, I would have let them know. I thought we were fortunate to be down 13.”
The Crusaders defense stepped up in the final 16 minutes, outscoring Newark 36-16 while forcing 13 turnovers including eight in the third quarter.
“We changed the defense up from our man to man to a bit of zone press out of halftime,” Hopkins said.
Dan Stearns drilled a three in the third quarter with five minutes to go that changed the momentum of the game that saw the Crusaders only down one at the end of the third quarter.
“I thought that shot really loosened us up a little bit,” said Hopkins.
Gary Raupers had 23 points to lead Notre Dame, including 16 in the second half, while Cole Clark added 12 points and Kyreese Fisher chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.
“Gary is an energy guy, he can make things happen,” said Hopkins. “He forced some turnovers in the second half that really helped us.”
Jayden Peters led Newark with 14 points and Mason Vandermortel netted 10 points.
“It was very inspiring to watch our play in the second half,” Hopkins said. “It’s hard for a team as young as ours to feel sorry for themselves, but we didn’t do that.”
Elmira Notre Dame will face off against Johnson City in the Region II Championship game on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Johnson City 75, Mansfield 51
ELMIRA - Ladarius Thompson had 24 points and seven rebounds as Johnson City topped Mansfield 75-51 on Thursday.
The Wildcats took a 34-23 lead in to halftime and outscored Mansfield 41-28 in the second half, including 30-16 in the final frame.
Johnson City shot 53 percent from the field while holding Mansfield to only 39 percent.
Dylan Meyer led Mansfield with 14 points, Brent Burleigh contributed 13 and Jacob Green added 14 along with 3 three-pointers.
The Wildcats will battle with Elmira Notre Dame in the Region II Championship game on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Regional Division I
Susquehanna 64, Troy 41
ELMIRA - Susquehanna used a strong first half to get past Troy on Thursday, 64-41.
The Sabres got off to a fast start with a 22-13 lead after one quarter and a 39-20 advantage at halftime.
Susquehanna forced 11 turnovers in the first half.
Jordan McGahy had 15 points to lead the Sabres and Matt Fiorentino added 11 points.
Nate Martin had 12 points for Troy.
National Division Quarterfinal
St. Peters 60, Horseheads 37
ELMIRA - St. Peters outlasted Horseheads by a score of 60-37 on Thursday in the National Division Quarterfinals.
The game was tight after one quarter with St. Peters only holding a 18-15 lead.
St. Peters then proceeded to outscore the Blue Raiders 42-22 in the next three quarters for the victory.
Chris Ledium led St. Peters with 23 points and Chris Clancy added 10 points.
Lewis Clearwater posted 12 points for the Blue Raiders and Marcus Hayes chipped in 11 points.
Horseheads only shot 12 for 46 from the field in the game, with only two assists.
McDonogh 63, Seton Catholic 48
ELMIRA - University of Florida commit Noah Locke had 32 points and seven rebounds to lead McDonogh over Seton Catholic 63-48 on Thursday in the National Division Quarterfinals.
Seton Catholic held a 28-27 lead after the first half.
The Eagles then proceeded to outscore the Saints 17-8 in the third quarter and 19-12 in the final frame.
Drew Green had 21 points and 10 rebounds in addition to Locke’s 32.
Marcus Dayes posted a team high 14 points for the Saints and both Patrick Hartrick and Leo Gallagher added 10 points.
Benedictine Prep 77, Landon Prep 51
ELMIRA - Benedictine Prep used a strong first half to get past Landon Prep 77-51 on Thursday.
Benedictine Prep got out to a 43-15 lead in the first half and never looked back.
The Cadets hit 11 three-pointers led by Eric Buckner with three triples for nine of his 11 points.
Davin Zeigler and Chris Jefferson each posted 17 points for Benedictine Prep.
Canin Reynolds registered 14 points for Landon Prep and Miles Davis added 11 points.
Elmira 61, McQuaid 54
ELMIRA - Elmira edged McQuaid Jesuit on Thursday in the National Division Quarterfinals.
The Express found themselves down 10-2 to start the game, but stormed back in the second quarter to take a 24-19 lead at the half. Elmira forced four turnovers in the second quarter.
Elmira held on to a slim 39-37 lead after three quarters and fended off McQuaid Jesuit in the final frame.
Nahjor Mack posted 17 points to lead the Express, Daron Driscoll added 16 points and Dan Fedor chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
Jermaine Taggart led McQuaid Jesuit with 18 points and Anthony Iglesia contributed 16 points.
