HORSEHEADS - The Horseheads varsity girls soccer team fell to 2-1 on the year following a 7-2 loss to the Vestal Golden Bears Friday at Horseheads High School.
The Blue Raiders scored two goals by halftime, but Vestal’s squad came out of the first half with four. Down 4-2 at the beginning of the second half, Horseheads wasn’t able to score for the rest of the match while Vestal padded its lead with three more goals.
Blue Raider Miranda Novitsky scored a goal unassisted. Jenna Grander scored Horseheads’ other goal with an assist by Sarah Wagner.
The Blue Raiders rotated in several goalies throughout the game. Among them, Sam Beck came away with five saves.
For Vestal, Victoria McKnight scored two goals, and Olivia McKnight scored a goal and provided an assist. Leah Eldred, Emilia Cappelett, Alexia Michitti and Albana Berjasavic each scored one goal.
Golden Bears goalie Emerson Wong had two saves.
Vestal improved to 3-0 on the season following the win.
Next up for Horseheads is an away match against Elmira at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Elmira High School.
Grape Vine (Tex.) 2, Corning 0 ; Golden Valley (Ca.)
FLORIDA - Corning dropped two games in Florida at the KSA Universal Fall Classic Friday.
Grape Vine Texas topped Corning 10-25, 8-25 and Golden Valley California edged the Hawks 21-25, 25-13 and 11-15.
"The girls played really well, but the scores dont show it," Corning head coach Irene Furness said. "Our play is getting better."
Sadie Sharkey had seven kills and eight digs on the day for Corning, Olivia Tanneberger added five kills and four blocks, Maddy Gorges contributed four aces and Rihanne Nickerson had 12 setter assists.
Corning contiues the tournament today at 12:30 p.m.
Horseheads 209, Union-Endicott 228
ENJOIE - Horseheads topped Union-Endicott 209-228 Friday in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference matchup.
Nick Murray led the way for the Blue Raiders with a 39, Dan Huten and Zach Locke carded a 42 and Seth Conway and Nick Harvey carded a 43.
Cal Machalek led the Tigers with a 44, Caleb Macan and Christian Macan both carded a 45 while R.J. Juodaitis and Shane Hurd had a 47.
"We’re off to a great start this season," Horseheads head coach Ed Browning said. "This was a tough week with four events in five days. They did a good job handling it."
Horseheads improves to 5-0 with the win.
Corning 210, Ithaca 215
CORNING - Corning edged Ithaca 210-215 Thursday in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference golf matchup.
Tyler Thomas led the Hawks with an overall medalist score of 33. Drew Beall added a 43, Carson Crane carded a 44 along with Ben Tubbs and Luca Neally posted a 46.
For Ithaca, Nick Cartmill led the Little Red with a 39 followed by J.T. Thomforde (43), Riley Pauldine (44), Zach Cartmil (45) and Andrew Hay (45).
Corning improved to 4-1 and will travel to Binghamton Tuesday at 11 a.m. in its next contest.
Alfred-Almond 3, Prattsburgh 2
PRATTSBURGH - Alfred-Almond got past Prattsburgh 3-2 monday in a girls tennis matchup.
Alfred-Almond picked up a win in first singles with Abby Kelly (7-5, 6-2) and third singles with Lauren Kelly (6-3, 6-2).
Kendra Pinckney won second singles for the Vikings (6-2, 5-7, 6-2).
In doubles play, Mikaela Wisniewski & Katie Elliott won first singles for Alfred-Almond (6-1, 6-1) and Hailey Patoline & Laura McDermott earned a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win in second doubles.
