The Campbell-Savona wrestling team hosted their first ever Take Down Cancer night Wednesday, January 18 against the Watkins Glen wrestling team. Watkins Glen won the match 50-21 but the Campbell-Savona team had the satisfaction of knowing their efforts were not without appreciation and success. The team chose this night to be their first annual Take Down Cancer match to raise funds to help in the fight against cancer. The team sold t-shirts, had a collection jug at the gym entrance, and took pledges and donations towards how many takedowns were scored during the entire match. At the conclusion of the event the C-S team had raised a total of $1,714.00 for their efforts.
On Sunday January 29 the C-S wrestling team traveled to the University of Buffalo as the guests of the Bulls wrestling team at their Take Down Cancer match versus Ohio University. Take Down Cancer originated at the University of Buffalo in 2010 when a former wrestler, and team captain, named Jeff Parker was diagnosed with skin cancer in the spring of 2009. Cancer claimed Jeff Parker’s life one year later in May of 2010. The wrestling team decided to start Take Down Cancer to raise money to be put into a foundation named after Jeff Parker to help in the treatment and research of cancer in young adults and children. The C-S wrestlers were asked to stand and be recognized at the half time events, and the team captains Nick Simons, Collin Rexford, and Joel Rosko presented a check for $1,214 to Joseph Muscarella, co-founder of Take Down Cancer, for the Jeff Parker Foundation. The remaining $500 will be donated to the Campbell-Savona Hike-4-Mike Club in memory of Mike Francis, a member of the C-S class of 2009 who passed away after graduation. Francis had battled cancer his entire high school career.
The wrestlers would like to thank all of the faculty, staff, community members, and businesses that supported them in this effort, which will become an annual part of the wrestling season. Wrestling team members who participated in this project are Darnell Barron, Matt Clark, Dylan Eaton, Rick Emerson, John Fairbrother, Ethan Hall, Geoff Hargrave, Kevin Holford, Cody Kuenzli, Anthony Nichols, Thomas Nichols, Devon Paul, Collin Rexford, Joel Rosko, Paul Sherer, Mike Simkin, Nick Simons, and Jake Wood.
