The Food Bank of the Southern Tier announces that a grant was received in the amount of $2,020 from Corning Incorporated Foundation.
These funds will be used to support the Food Bank’s food acquisition and distribution across their six county service area.
The grant was awarded in support of an Empty Bowls event recently hosted at Corning Incorporated Headquarters. Each Corning Incorporated employee made a $25 donation in exchange for a beautiful handmade ceramic bowl from 171 Cedar Arts Center and other local artists, and enjoyed a simple buffet lunch of soups, breads and desserts. Employee contributions totaled $2,020, which resulted in a gift in the same amount from the Foundation. Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to raise money and awareness in the fight against hunger. The bowls are a year-round reminder of the important issues surrounding hunger in our communities.
Each week, over 11,000 individuals visit a hunger-relief member agency served by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. In 2011, the Food Bank distributed nearly 7.5 million pounds of food to neighbors in need across the six Southern Tier counties of Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins.
