Family, friends and community members turned out to pay their last respects to Army Spc. Ryan Jayne on Wednesday evening.
Hundreds of mourners attended calling hours and a memorial service in the auditorium at Corning East High School, where Jayne graduated in 2008.
At the conclusion of services, the crowd walked slowly to nearby War Memorial Stadium, through lines of uniformed military, police, firefighters and veterans’ organizations standing at attention.
Then the family emerged, walking slowly together. Finally, Jayne’s coffin was carried by soldiers onto the field, passing beneath a huge American flag hung between the extended ladders of two Corning city fire trucks.
Memorial Stadium, although filled with people, was quiet and still on a frigid November night.
Jayne was given military honors during a ceremony that included a rifle salute, the playing of “Taps,” and the presentation of the neatly folded flag that had draped Jayne’s coffin to his family.
Jayne, 22, was killed Nov. 3 while serving his country in Afghanistan.
He is the seventh soldier from Steuben County known to have been killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
