The local unemployment rate fell in October, following a typical fall trend.


In Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties combined, the October unemployment rate was 8.9 percent, down from 9.1 percent in September. It October 2011, the local unemployment rate was 8.1 percent.


Over the past 23 years, the tri-county unemployment rate has fallen from September to October 18 times. Two other times, it remained flat.


Of the local counties, Schuyler’s October unemployment rate of 7.8 percent was the lowest, followed by Chemung at 8.8 percent and Steuben at 9.3 percent. In October 2011, the counties’ unemployment rates were 6.7 percent, 7.7 percent and 8.7 percent, respectively.
