The lights are back on to stay in the Village of Bath.
BEGWS work crews completed repairs at the damaged Wilson Street substation Tuesday afternoon, Director Matthew J. Hunter said.
“We’re up and back to normal,” Hunter said. “At just about noon we confirmed everything is working properly, without incident or concern.”
What, exactly, caused the outage that left more than 4,000 customers in the dark this weekend is still unknown. More than 80 percent of households in the village were affected.
The Bath Village Police Department said the substation was not vandalized or hit by a falling tree.
“It’s under investigation, but it looks like it was an act of God, which means caused by stuff getting on a power line or something like that,” Hunter said.
Hunter said NYSEG to helping to determine the cause.
“We’re going through all the information we’ve been collecting throughout the investigation,” Hunter said.
The power first went out at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday and returned for most around mid-Sunday morning, Hunter said.
An outage again occurred throughout much of Sunday night.
Restaurants, businesses and homeowners in the area feared another outage would occur Monday night, but the lights stayed on.
“We were concerned that on Monday night it would again be an issue,” Hunter said.
Tim Marshall, of the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services, said Bath businesses and residents were asked not to use items such clothes watching machines and dishwashers and to set their thermostats at 60 degrees or less on Monday to reduce the likelihood of another blackout.
“People were doing what they were asked to do,” Marshall said.
Hunter thanked to Bath residents for doing their part.
“(Their) efforts to conserve our precious electrical resource directly affected our ability to provide uninterrupted services from the Sunday evening power restoration period until full system restoration today,” Hunter said.
