The Steuben County Task Force for the Prevention of Child Abuse is again planning to celebrate April as Child Abuse Awareness Month, and is requesting the help of youth groups and organizations to get involved.
The group is planning a Pinwheels and Promises Campaign to raise awareness of the prevalence and prevention of child abuse in the county. Last year, school groups and youth organizations made pinwheels to display, and more groups are needed this year.
While a pinwheel often brings back memories of childhood, it is an important symbol for campaign organizers. “The abuse and maltreatment of children is more common than we like to think, affecting hundreds of children each year in Steuben County alone,” indicated Bill Caudill, Program Coordinator of the Steuben County Youth Bureau. “A simple beautiful pinwheel can help to tie the community together to help protect our children.”
The Pinwheel and Promises Campaign is part of a number of special activities planned for April, including a kick-off event in Bath and various events throughout the county.
“Right now, we need clubs and organizations that are willing to help,” Caudill said. “We need Boy and Girl Scout troops, church youth groups, school clubs, or any group that is able to make pinwheels for this effort. We want to make a colorful impact across the county in April.”
To volunteer to make or display pinwheels, or to get additional information on the campaign, contact the Steuben County Youth Bureau at 607-664-2119, or visit the Youth Bureau department web page on the county website, www.steubencony.org.
