A regional provider of heavy-duty Caterpillar equipment is seeking permission to build a large sales-and-service facility in the Town of Big Flats.
Milton CAT is proposing 35,000 square feet of development on Daniel Zenker Drive near Palmer Road. The operation would include office space, display space, warehouse space, utility storage, service bays and wash bays.
The company has submitted a site plan, which will be reviewed Thursday by the Chemung County Planning Board.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many jobs the new business would create or when the business might open, but approval is likely.
The Big Flats Town Board this summer approved changes to its zoning laws that authorize heavy equipment to be sold and serviced on Daniel Zenker Drive. Previously, that part of the town was off limits to such operations.
The Town Board approved the changes several months after Caterpillar representatives approached the town about possibly building a facility in Big Flats, though no formal application was submitted at that time, officials said.
Milton CAT is a provider of Caterpillar machines, power systems, parts and service in the Northeast. It has 13 locations in New York, Massachuesettes, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The nearest location is in Binghamton.
