Haverling Central School District's Vernon E. Wightman Primary School teaching assistant Jill Smith recently was awarded the 2012 Doris Bovee Outstanding Woman Educator Award by the Beta Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International. Delta Kappa Gamma International is an invitational organization whose membership is composed of key women educators.
Ms. Smith received this award as a woman changing her career to the field of education. Working as a teaching assistant with struggling learners, Ms. Smith discovered her passion for teaching. She believes in a child-centered classroom environment in which instruction is differentiated to meet diverse student needs. Ms. Smith’s training as a literacy specialist, along with her enthusiasm for education and concern for her students’ success, make her an ideal candidate for this award.
