  • U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, will have at least one challenger in the 2014 election.
Ithaca Democrat Martha Robertson, the chair of the Tompkins County Legislature, has announced plans to run for the 23rd Congressional District seat currently held by Reed.
Robertson held  a campaign kickoff event at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Corning’s Centerway Square.
Robertson has served on the Tompkins County Legislature since 2002, and served as chair since 2010. She also chairs the county’s Industrial Development Agency and is active with the New York State Association of Counties.
Robertson is an outspoken critic of fracking who has expressed concerns about heavy shale gas drilling coming to upstate New York, often speaking at public hearings and rallies in the area and in Albany.
Reed narrowly defeated another Tompkins County legislator, Nate Shinagawa, in the 2012 election. Shinagawa recently decided not to run again, but will reportedly work on Robertson’s campaign.
Reed was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2010.
