  • Opening statements are scheduled to begin Friday in the murder trial of an Addison woman who allegedly plotted the killing of her ex-boyfriend.??
Jury selection in the case began Monday and concluded Tuesday, but opening statements and testimony won’t begin until later this week. The trial is being held in Schuyler County Court.??
Alice Trappler, 40, is accused of planning the killing of 30-year-old Daniel Bennett, who was shot to death April 19, 2012, at his home on Pearl Street in Dix.??
Authorities say Trappler’s ex-husband, 32-year-old Thomas Borden of Corning, was the triggerman. Borden’s stepbrother, 25-year-old Nathan Hand of Corning, was with Borden at the time of the killing.??
Hand has already pleaded guilty to manslaughter in exchange for a 19-year prison sentence. He will testify against Trappler. Hand has said that he and Borden did not go to Bennett’s home until they received a call from Trappler.??
Authorities have not publicly offered a motive for the killing, but Bennett was the father of Trappler’s infant daughter. The day after the killing, Trappler and Bennett were scheduled to appear in court over paternity, but both sides already knew Bennett was the child’s father, defense attorney Susan BetzJitomir said.??
Trappler was leery of having Bennett in her daughter’s life because Bennett treated Trappler poorly, BetzJitomir said. But that isn’t motive for murder, she said.??
“(Paternity’s) still a far cry from custody and visitation,” BetzJitomir said in February. “There was no order that (Bennett) was going to see this kid by himself ... At the very least, she wanted supervised visits. The worst-case scenario was she was going to leave for Texas. On no planet was she thinking of doing something terrible.” BetzJitomir suggested Borden, who offered to become the baby’s legal father, was a serial killer who killed Bennett to get him out of the picture.??
Borden was not arrested in the case. He died after he jumped in front of a train as police tried to apprehend him four days after the killing.
