  • New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo this week sent a special Citation, to the children, families and all those associated with Camp Good Days and Special Times.  The Citation was presented, on behalf of Governor Cuomo, to the campers participating in Camp Good Days’ Doing A World Of Good Program, by Lieutenant Governor, Robert Duffy, on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, during the Camp Good Days’ Annual Summer Open House.
Lieutenant Governor Duffy, and his wife, Barb, spent the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at the Camp Good Days’ Recreational Facility, located on the shores of Keuka Lake in Branchport, New York, visiting with the campers, volunteers and staff who were all part of the Doing A World Of Good Program.
The Doing A World Of Good Program is a residential camping program hosting children with cancer from around the world for two weeks, along with American children with cancer or sickle cell anemia, for one week. International campers participating in this year’s Doing A World Of Good Program are from the Bahamas, Mexico, Germany, Dominican Republic, Turks & Caicos, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Ethiopia.
In part, the Citation recognizes Camp Good Days for outstanding humanitarian service to children with cancer and their families, the organization’s longevity and its continuation as a beacon of light in many young lives.  The Citation notes Camp Good Days’ standing as one of the largest organizations of its kind and for having served as a model for numerous other cancer treatment centers and organizations around the world.  The Citation also includes recognition for the many, many volunteers and supporters who give so much, in so many ways, to help Camp Good Days fulfill the promise made by Chairman & Founder, Gary Mervis, 33 years ago, that all of the programs and services provided by Camp Good Days would be offered free of charge to the participants, so as not to place any additional financial burden on those families served.
“All of our campers, volunteers, and staff were so excited to have to the opportunity to meet and spend some time with Lieutenant Governor Duffy and his wife, Barb, on Wednesday,” says Mervis.  “The surprise presentation of the Citation from Governor Cuomo was truly above and beyond our expectations and to have it presented by Lieutenant Governor Duffy, who has been not only a leader in our city, community, and state, but a longtime friend to the children and families we serve, made it that much more special.  I know I speak for all of us at Camp Good Days when I say that we are honored and humbled by the kind words and recognition expressed in the Citation.”
Camp Good Days and Special Times, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life threatening challenges, was founded by Mervis in 1979, following the diagnosis of his youngest daughter, Teddi, with a malignant brain tumor.
Page 2 of 2 - What was started to provide Teddi and 62 other children with cancer (21 from Rochester, 21 from Buffalo, 21 from Syracuse) with a residential camping experience, has grown to become one of the largest organizations of its kind, having served as model for other organizations and cancer treatment centers around the world.  Providing residential camping programs and year-round recreational and support activities and events, Camp Good Days has served more than 43,000 campers from 22 states and 27 foreign countries.  Camp Good Days maintains accreditation from the American Camp Association (ACA) and has been inducted into the Safety 1st Hall of Fame by Markel Insurance Company.
