  • Several local fire departments battled a barn fire at the Alleger Farm on South Church Road in the Town of Cameron Friday, Sept. 14. Firefighters remained on the scene until 11:30 Friday night.
The Cameron Fire Department said 50 cattle were killed in the blaze. As many as 16 cows were saved, a Cameron assistant fire chief said. Members of the Alleger family tried to enter the smokey barn and free the animals.
Firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 4 p.m. Investigators believe the fire started in a hay mow. Investigators told an assistant Cameron fire chief that they believe an electrical problem may have sparked the fire.
Among the departments assisting the Cameron Fire Department at the scene were Canisteo, Jasper, Troupsburg, Woodull, Addison, Gang Mills and Tuscarora. A full listing of the departments will be published in The Spectator Sunday.
Flames were still shooting up from the structure at about 5 p.m. Two firefighters were injured, none seriously. One firefighters sustained cuts to his face.
Several departments returned to the farm Saturday to put down hot spots.
