  • A Village of Bath organization has received more than $10,000 from the state Department of Environmental Conservation to help keep its trees in good condition.
The village’s Shade Tree Committee was awarded $11,240 in state funds to use for training and pruning village trees.
The village was one of 66 municipalities to receive the funds of “urban foresting.” Some 95 groups applied for the funding, which totaled nearly $1 million.
The committee annually plants shade trees in the village, a member of Shade Tree USA, beginning with a special Arbor Day ceremony in Pulteney Square.
Village Mayor John Stranges said he was pleased with the DEC award, and hopes to hear soon about the village’s application for a state Main Street grant of $250,000.
The matching grant would allow for the refurbishment of 10 businesses on Liberty and Steuben streets.
