  • Irregularities in the Avoca justice court database has led to felony and misdemeanor charges against a former court clerk.
Shawn M. Wellington, 41, of Chase Street, was charged Thursday with first-degree falsifying business records, a class E felony, official misconduct, a class A misdemeanor, and petit larceny, also a class A misdemeanor, according to Steuben County Sheriff's Department.
County Sheriff Joel Ordway said his office was contacted last May by the state Office of Court Administration and asked to investigate irregularities discovered in the Avoca Justice Court database.  Since then investigators have worked with the state Comptroller to investigate roughly a dozen irregularities found during the court record audit.
According to Ordway, on Aug. 1, 2011, Wellington issued a receipt for a traffic ticket paid in cash.
But the money associated with the transaction was found to be missing and the entry in the Court database was erased., Ordway said.
According to deputies, Wellington surrendered to the sheriff's office, was arraigned in Erwin town court.
She was released on her own recognizance with the next court date scheduled for Nov. 7.
