  • A 46-year-old man was identified Friday, June 21, as the person who was killed during a police standoff and barn fire Monday night in the Town of Bath.
Timothy A. Preston, of Velie Road, Bath, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office. He was identified through dental records, according to the Steuben County Sheriff ’s Office.
According to police, deputies and state troopers responded to a Velie Road residence around 8:30 p.m. Monday for a reported domestic dispute. When police arrived, they found an armed man ? Preston ? standing in the driveway.
Preston retreated into a barn near the residence, and police set up a perimeter. Over the next hour, police heard several gunshots come from inside barn, but the man was not firing at police, and officers did not return fire, authorities said.
As the sheriff ’s Critical Incident Response Team was securing an inner perimeter, police heard a muffled gunshot come from the barn. Soon after, police observed fl ames coming from the barn.
Firefighters battled the blaze after the scene was determined to be safe by police, but the barn was destroyed by the fire. Firefighters saved the house.
Investigators found Preston’s body inside the burned barn.
Authorities have not said what caused the fire, but police said the officers did nothing that would have sparked the blaze.
    The investigation is ongoing.
