  • An investigation is continuing into a four-hour standoff in Savona during which a suicidal man was shot and killed.
State troopers report  Richard Hill Jr., 35, was killed about 8 p.m. after he emerged from his family’s home, brandishing a long gun, according to Maj. Mark Koss, Troop E.
The standoff began around 4:30 p.m. at 48 E. Lamoka Ave.
The family left, and the home was surrounded by state police and Steuben County sheriff’s deputies. The area was blocked off to traffic, and neighbors were evacuated.
During the standoff, Hill fired his gun multiple times, according to state police. Koss said police were investigating whether the shots were fired inside the home or at police outside, or both.
Police began negotiations with Hill in an attempt to get him to surrender, but talks broke down about 7:45 p.m., Koss said.
A state police critical incident response team approached the home, and Hill was shot a short time later.
Koss said he was not sure if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident.
