  • A six-month, $2.5 million project to widen County Route 64 will begin next week, the Chemung County Department of Public Works announced.??
Work crews will do a construction survey Monday. The work zone was set up Wednesday.??
The heavily congested stretch of County Route 64 between Lowe’s and Southern Tier Crossing will be widened to four lanes during the project.??
Turn lanes will also be added, and improvements will be made to drainage, traffic signals and signage. Afterward, the road will be repaved and restriped.??
Road closures will be kept to a minimum, but there will be delays, DPW officials say.
??“This will be a very active work zone. Please pay attention to signage and any directions from construction flaggers or police officers. Lanes will be narrowed through the corridor to allow for staged construction. Drive carefully, expect delays, and plan extra time to reach your destination,” the DPW said in a statement.??
The project is expected to be done by late October, before the holiday shopping rush in the Arnot Mall retail hub, officials say.??
The project engineer is Fisher Associates, and the contractor is Chemung Contracting.
