  • Big Lots is expected to open this summer in the former Ames Plaza off Victory Highway.
Erwin Town Manager Rita McCarthy said the town recently issued a building permit to Big Lots Stores Inc., which will renovate the vacant sites.
Big Lots, a discount retailer that gets merchandise from manufacturers trying to reduce inventory and sells it at a markdown, will take the spots formerly occupied by Joanne Fabric and Rite Aid Pharmacy.
Big Lots inventory generally includes grocery and seasonal items as well as furniture, toys, tools and mattresses.
The closest Big Lots in the area is located at 801 Lake St., Elmira.
McCarthy said she is not sure when work to upgrade the section of the plaza will begin or when Big Lots will officially open.
“Revitalization of the plaza is a terrific thing. It’s great for the community, and it’s great for the neighborhood,” McCarthy said. “It certainly makes other open spots in the plaza more attractive to businesses.”
A Big Lots representative could not be reached Tuesday for comment.
Big Lots, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, operates more than 1,400 U.S. stores.
