  • Many in the area remember the cool moonlit February night when residents may have cursed their hamstrung computers as they tried to cast one … last… vote for the village of Hammondsport as Budget Travel’s Coolest Small Town.
Many will remember the moments of frustrated waiting as Budget Travel tussled with what to do with their crashed server, the sense of exhilaration at the magazine’s Solomon-like decision to award the honor to Hammondsport and Beaufort, N.C.
Well, the long night and joyful aftermath will reach a high point with a village-wide celebration noon, June 30, in the Village Square of Hammondsport.
According to a press release issued by the Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau the festivities will center around all the things that give Hammondsport its distinct cool factor, closing with a fireworks display.
Local and state officials will start off the event with speeches noting what became a national celebration of the entire region.
“When the voting was taking place it wasn't confined to just residents and businesses in Hammondsport,” said Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce President Brett Steeves.
In fact, boundaries usually marked by townships and county lines, even state lines, all but disappeared. In recognition of that fact, Hammondsport is hosting this event as a way to reach out to the surrounding region and show our appreciation.”
The afternoon will be filled with live music, children’s activities and touches of the past, including a seaplane moored at Depot Park on Keuka Lake. The village will host Finger Lakes Wine and Beer from 1 – 3 p.m. with admission restricted to those 21 and over, with the purchase of a wristband. Complimentary commemorative wine and beer glasses will be included in the admission fee. Hammondsport Coolest Small Town logo gear will be available throughout the afternoon at the Hammondsport Visitor Center. The celebration coincides with the beloved annual Fireman’s Parade and Carnival which kicks off at 6 p.m. with a seaplane flyover.
“We are excited to celebrate Hammondsport’s victory in this very special way,” said Peggy Coleman, President of the Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau. “This title brings huge recognition to our area. It has put Hammondsport in a very public spotlight this year, and we’re happy to be able to celebrate this accomplishment with the people who made it all possible.”
