COHOCTON – John R. Bennett, 57, passed away early Friday morning, August 19, 2011, at his home in Cohocton, surrounded by his family.

John was born January 8, 1954 in Dansville, the son of Richard and Dorothy (Perry) Bennett. John and Nancy Carey were  married August 13, 1977 and celebrated 34 years of marriage, residing in Cohocton since 1979. John was in the construction business since his graduation from high school. He worked for his father's construction company for several years, and upon his father's retirement, John and his brother became owners and operators of Bennett Construction in Dansville.

Their commercial construction company has built more than 130 McDonald's Restaurants in New York state throughout the years, as well as handling many other projects.
John enjoyed hunting, traveling and camping. Many of their travels took them to camping areas in Myrtle Beach, SC, Jacksonville, Fla. the Adirondack Mountains and many other areas on the East Coast. He enjoyed sitting on his porch and he especially loved spending time with his family.

John was predeceased by his father-in-law Paul Carey. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Nancy Bennett, of Cohocton; his son, John Bennett of Cohocton; his daughter Jessica (Scott) Calkins of Bath; his grandson, Jackson Calkins of Bath; his loyal Jack Russell Terrier dog, Sophie; his parents, Richard and Dorothy Bennett of Dansville; his siblings, Kathy (Bill) Shepard of Piffard; Jim (Jody) Bennett of Dansville;Joe (Kathy) Bennett of Williamson; his mother-in-law, Jean Carey of Cohocton; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom Carey (Michala Cosgrove) of Cohocton; Tim (Rhonda) Carey of Cohocton and Bill (Mila) Carey of CA; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of John's life was held Saturday, August 27 at the family's home at 15 Church St., Cohocton. Memorial contributions in John R. Bennett's memory may be made to the Cohocton Lions Club, P.O. Box 542, Cohocton, NY 14826 or to the Cohocton Lioness Club, Kirkwood Rd., Cohocton, NY.

The St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 W. Naples St., Wayland was in charge of arrangements.
