Two women were charged Sunday after Elmira Police received a tip of a woman driving drunk with children in her car.
Police were called to the area of Franklin Street at approximately 1:20 a.m. by a citizen, who provided them with the description of a vehicle he believed was being driven by a drunk driver.
An officer stopped a vehicle matching the description on Baty Street. Inside the vehicle were the driver and another woman with two small children in the back seat, police said.
Chemung County Child Protective services was called to assist with the children.
The driver, Alisha J. Root, 23, of Waverly, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, an E felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. The DWI charge was upgraded to a felony because there were children in the vehicle under age 15, police said.
The adult passenger, Michelle T. Lee, 22, of Waverly, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Chemung County Child Protective Services and the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
