CORNING - The Corning Community YMCA spent most of the morning Saturday teaching kids and their families how to lead healthy lifestyles.

A YMCA statement said Healthy Kids Day, which was celebrated at more than a thousand YMCA’s across the country Saturday, was a day for “kicking off summer and asking kids and parents to pledge to stay active and healthy all summer long.”

“They get to learn about healthy lifestyle choices, programs that are coming up for the summer,” said Charlotte Smith, marketing coordinator at the Corning Community YMCA. “Really what we want to do is get everyone active, and we want it to be a family affair.

“So it’s for the kids, but we had a lot of big kids here too.”

The kids got to participate in activities including lightsaber training and Zumba.

By promoting healthy lifestyles early, Smith said the YMCA hopes that kids are able to avoid poor health and common ailments as they continue through their lives.

“So instead of having to go into a diabetes program, we’re helping to avoid that,” she said. “To really start those lifestyle choices early.”

Healthy Kids Day is an annual YMCA event.
