PAINTED POST - According to authorities, a large fire erupted behind Tractor Supply in Painted Post Thursday and threatened the America’s Best Value Inn next door, but firefighters swiftly put it out before it caused further damage.

The Forest View-Gang Mills Fire Department responded to the scene at 11:33 a.m. Thursday and discovered that a larger-sized dumpster filled with wood, pallets and old shelving in the Tractor Supply parking lot was in flames.

Forest View-Gang Mills Assistant Fire Chief Ed Kizis estimated the flames were nearly 20 feet above the store. Smoke wafted through parts of South Hamilton Street in front of the Tractor Supply as traffic moved along.

While he said he was worried the Tractor Supply could also catch on fire, Kizis said his immediate concern was the blaze could spread to the America’s Best Value Inn located a few yards next door.

“With the wind and the embers, there’s a big concern,” he said.

Crews with Forest View-Gang Mills fought the dumpster blaze while the Corning City Fire Department set up next door at the inn and went through the building as a precaution. The Painted Post Fire Department and New York State Police also responded to the scene.

Responders successfully contained the fire at the dumpster and had it under control shortly after they were dispatched. By 12:15 p.m., the flames were out and crews were dousing smoldering junk.

Kizis said the inn and the Tractor Supply didn’t sustain any damage and there were no injuries.

He said first responders aren’t sure at this time how the fire started. A fire investigation team has been requested.
