CORNING - Patrolmen were dispatched to an accident involving a pickup truck and motorized scooter at about 1:57 a.m. Sunday morning in the Wegmans parking lot.
City Police Lt. Jeff Heverly said patrolmen investigated the accident on scene and determined the operator of the pickup, Hugo Murphy, was intoxicated and had allegedly struck a woman on a motorized scooter intentionally.
Murphy then attempted to leave the scene via a taxi, Heverly said. Patrolmen were able to intercept the cab before it left the scene.
Police said field sobriety test were administered to Murphy and he was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated.
The operator of the motorized scooter was transported to the Corning Emergency Room by AMR ambulance and was treated and later released.
Murphy, 65, of 101 Columbia Street, Corning, Dayspring Apartments, was charged with driving while intoxicated, a class E felony, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and second-degree assault.
He was held at the Corning Police Department Jail overnight and arraigned Monday morning by Corning City Judge Mathew McCarthy. Murphy was then sent to the Steuben County Jail without bail.
Heverly said the incident is still under investigation and more charges may be filed at a later date.
