CORNING | Everything is ready for the distribution of backpacks full of school supplies today at the Corning Salvation Army.
The distribution is set for 3-6 p.m. today at the 32 Denison Parkway East building.
Captain Wanda Rivera said the backpacks are available for grades K-12, with appropriate supplies based on lists from the school district.
More than a dozen current and retired teachers, along with their family members, helped pack 185 backpacks Wednesday.
Cathy Patterson, of the Gamma Zeta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an association of woman teachers, also presented a check for $500, on top of an earlier equal donation, which helps the Salvation Army to pay for the backpacks.
The supplies themselves are largely donated by the teachers’ group, including sister chapter Beta Chi, as well as Christ Church and First Presbyterian Church.
To participate in the backpack distribution, parents or legal guardians must accompany children to the Salvation Army.
Parents and guardians must supply identification plus proof of address (a license or utility bill or other addressed mail).
For each child, they also need to bring a social security card, benefit card or birth certificate.
The program doesn’t require proof of income.
Backpacks are limited to one per child.
