CORNING - House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, accompanied Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, for a visit to Corning Wednesday afternoon.
The two representatives held a fundraiser at the Corning Radisson, followed by a tour of the city.
“Steve Scalise is one of our true leaders in this country,” said Reed. “To have Steve here in our hometown is something I’m very proud of. I’m glad he’s taking the time out of his schedule to come visit.”
“It’s great to be here in Corning New York, especially with my good friend here Tom Reed,” said Scalise. “Tom is not only a friend, but he’s one of the people that helps us get our agenda passed.”
Reed and Scalise spent about 10 minutes talking to local media before moving onto other affairs. The two discussed the Republican agenda and upcoming plans for when the House reconvenes in September, including the Republican tax bill, the upcoming general election in November, and trade discussions.
Scalise said the Corning area is an example of a region that has seen results from Congress’ actions.
“You can see it here in Corning, where companies are hiring again, and you’re seeing people get pay raises and bonuses,” he said.
Scalise also endorsed the work President Donald Trump has done regarding the economy while in office.
“Fortunately now (Donald Trump is) in office working with us to make sure that we’re able to get important bills signed into law that get the economy moving again,” he said.
Scalise was shot by a gunman in June 2017 while practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game for Charity with colleagues in Alexandria, VA. The Congressman has since recovered, and on Wednesday was walking with the assistance of a cane.
