ELMIRA - The 68-year-old Elmira man who was struck by a car Tuesday afternoon on Grand Central Avenue died from his injuries on shortly after being rushed to Arnot Ogden Medical Center.
Charles G. Rogers, the man killed in the accident, was in critical condition when rushed to the hospital after being struck by a car while riding a bicycle, police said. His family has been notified of his death.
Sara E. Harnas, 40, of Elmira Heights, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated unlicensed operation after a motor vehicle after striking the bicyclist. She was arraigned in Elmira City Court Tuesday and sent to the Chemung County Jail.
Upon arrival, Elmira Police Patrolmen located one seriously injured adult male and a witness who remained on the scene in order to render aid to the victim, police said. The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene.
Elmira Police Captain Anthony A. Alvernaz said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected.
The Elmira Police Department was assisted by the Elmira Heights and Horseheads Police Departments and the New York State Police.
