HAMMONDSPORT - Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery on Middle Road in Hammondsport was recently named to Wine & Spirits Magazine’s Top 100 Wineries of 2019 -- its second time in several years it’s been featured on the exclusive list.

Wine & Spirit Magazine, one of the most prominent publications in the industry, also featured Dr. Frank’s in its 2016 Top 100 edition. The magazine’s annual Top 100 list is international and features wineries from multiple countries around the globe.

Dr. Frank was among the dozens of wineries featured on the list from the United States. But it was the only one featured from New York.

“This is a huge award for us because we’re showing the New York flag to the world,” said Dr. Frank’s President Fred Frank at a small celebration Tuesday with friends and trade. “It’s very competitive with hundreds of thousands of wineries in the world. We just work hard all year round making the best wines we can.”

“The future is very bright for us,” said Dr. Frank’s General Manager Meaghan Frank.

Wine & Spirit Magazine determines its list through a blind tasting process, where magazine reviewers taste a variety of wines from various wineries. Fred Frank said the magazine tasted nearly a dozen Dr. Franks wines, including gewurztraminer, pinot gris and pinot noir -- all of which scored well.

“It was a combined effort of wines, not just a single wine,” he said. “This is to me a great award because it’s the entire winery’s efforts -- it’s not just one wine. It’s what the winery did for that year, like a report card.”

Dr. Frank’s was founded by Ukranian viticulturist Konstantin Frank in the 1960s and today has some of the oldest vinifera grape vines in the region. Konstantin Frank is known for pioneering the production of vinifera grapes in the Finger Lakes.

“I like to think Konstantin would be proud to see how far we've come in the last 60 years," said Meaghan Frank. “Our goal is to keep moving forward; that means embracing new technology and equipment, continuing to develop estate vineyards and investing in the people that make our winery so special.”

On Oct. 10, Dr. Franks will be represented at a tasting event in San Francisco along with all 100 wineries featured on this year’s Top 100 list.

In addition to several dozen from the U.S., this year’s Top 100 list features wineries from Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Chile, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, and Spain.
