CORNING - Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes opened its new facility on West William Street in Corning Tuesday.
The two-story, approximately 4,500-square-foot new clinic is now open to patients. Michelle Thevenin, Director of Development for Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes, said the new clinic will offer improved facilities and an improved patient experience compared to the former clinic location on Walnut Street.
“[From a patient perspective] the flow is better, it’s more up-to-date, there’s greater patient privacy, and it’s just a nicer space,” said Thevenin. “And I think there’s better parking and better accessibility.”
Similar to Planned Parenthood clinics around the nation, the new clinic offers a variety of health services for men and women, particularly in the areas of reproductive and sexual health. Thevenin said unlike the former clinic, the new facility will have the ability to conduct in-clinic abortions.
The new clinic will also function as a sexual assault resource center and will offer health education programming.
Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes purchased the property in May 2015 for $470,000 from Rawland Developers Inc. Thevenin said the new building, which was expanded from an existing building, cost Planned Parenthood approximately $4 million to renovate and complete and was funded with the help of financial contributions from around the community.
She said the organization has received a lot of local support.
“People in general are very excited about the services we offer in the community,” said Thevenin. “Overall, we find we have gotten incredible support both from folks who are excited and enthusiastic but also offer financial support. We’ve been able to raise a fair amount of money to support the center.”
The new clinic accepts walk-ins. Patients can also visit ppsfl.org to schedule appointments. According to Thevenin, the clinic can be reached at (607) 962-4686.
