CORNING - The Corning Museum of Glass will host free glass blowing courses for veterans this weekend in honor of Veterans Day.
The one-hour classes will be held Saturday and Sunday and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for veterans and active military.
“During their time here, they'll get a sense of what it is to blow glass which may include getting to gather some hot glass,” said glassmaker Kurt Carlson. “They'll be hands on with the process and with my help and some other select staff will make some amazing things together.”
Carlson, himself a veteran of the Vietnam War, has led the program since it began in 2013.
Since then, the museum has held free veteran lessons at least one day of Veterans Day weekend each year. The last two years the lessons were held throughout the whole weekend, and they’ve been popular.
“The turnout has been amazing,” said Carlson. “I'm very involved with a veterans center in Canandaigua so I bring a big group of people or get them signed up from there, but we've had turnouts from local areas. Whatever spots we have we fill in.”
“The veterans, many that I know, look forward to this one event, all year long,” he said. “It's a very special thing to them.”
Pre-registration for these lessons is required and space is limited. For more information or to register, call (607) 438-5800 or email Fun with Glass at firstname.lastname@example.org.
