Brenda Lee McKay, 51, faces second-degree murder count

CORNING | 100-year-old Gerald C. Early is dead after police say a woman attacked the man in his home, beating him to death with a hammer.


Brenda Lee McKay, 51, of 163 Walnut St., Corning, was charged today with second-degree murder, according to Corning City Police.


Police said they responded to Early’s home at 62 W. First St. at 1:15 p.m. today after the man was found unconscious with severe trauma to his head.


Early was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.


Corning Police began a joint investigation, bringing in the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office.


The investigation led them to McKay, who they say entered Early’s home and struck him repeatedly in the head with a hammer.


Other details were not immediately available, including the time of the alleged attack. Police said the investigation is ongoing.


McKay is in the Steuben County Jail awaiting arraignment in the morning.
