Barbara Kay Lighty, 84, retired LPN, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2020 in Scottsdale, AZ after a brief illness. She was born in Owego, NY December 10, 1935 to parents Clifford and Donna Nelson. Her family moved to Buffalo, NY when she was a young girl and she grew up and went to school in the Riverside area. In October of 1954, Barbara and Neal Lighty were joined in marriage.
Barbara spent her life caring for others. After 15 years as a homemaker, raising three children, she went back to school and obtained her LPN. She was employed for over 10 years by Ira Davenport Hospital in Bath, NY in their critical care unit. While in Bath she made precious friends that she kept in contact with to this day.
In 1982, Barbara made the move to Phoenix, AZ to be near her children and to help care for her grandchildren. As they grew, she went back to work as a home health nurse for the Scottsdale Healthcare system until she retired in 2000.
Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by both her sons, Gregg and Mark Lighty, and her granddaughter, Beth Carey. We can’t leave out that her two precious fur-babies, JJ and Lola, will also be running to greet her.
She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly (Tim) Carey; grandchildren, Brian Carey, Christopher Lighty, Chris (Sandy) Smith, Angela (Aaron) Martin, Vanessa (Kat) Lighty and Malone Rhemrev; great-grandchildren Morgan, Jacey, Mason, Maddox, Cambree, Mark and Morrison; daughters-in-law, Margaret and Jody; and many special young people who called her Grandma Kay. She was beloved by numerous lifelong friends including Neal, Barb, Diane, Anne, Joyce and Marge.
We will greatly miss her quick wit, ready smile and caring ways. But we are comforted by remembering that her strong faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, gives us the peace of knowing we will be reunited for eternity.
Barbara will be laid to rest at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammondsport, NY. Memorial donations may be made to the Finger Lakes SPCA, 72 Cameron St, Bath, NY 14810.
