Mary Ruth Hoffman
Mary Ruth Hoffman, age 88, passed away due to Covid-19 on December 20, 2020 at the Fred and Harriet Taylor Health Center, where she was receiving care for dementia. Mary Ruth was born on July 17, 1932 in Johnstown, PA, where, at age 13, she met 14-year-old Luther Hoffman. The couple celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this past November.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Luther Hoffman; daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Richard Rescigno; daughter and son-in-law Joan and Joseph Ozog; beloved granddaughters Michelle and Nicole Rescigno and Abigail Ozog; sister Joyce Rix; and brother Jim Squire. Her husband Luther, Director of Music at Haverling, always had his wife's undying support. Her daughters truly knew what it meant to be loved unconditionally. Her granddaughters recall her involvement during their developmental years, in particular. "Grandma was always up for anything!" -- ready to facilitate their creative impulses and endeavors with props, art materials, puppets, and a vivid imagination! Time spent with family was what she treasured most.
In addition to her devotion to family, Mary's dedication to others was reflected in her choice of career and involvement in volunteer work. She taught high school English at Haverling in Bath, New York for 25 years, also serving as English Department Chairperson during the latter half of her career. After retirement, she became Christian Education Director at the Presbyterian Church for ten years, where she taught children about Christianity and put together numerous Christmas musicals and Vacation Bible School programs. She lovingly guided the children during rehearsals and enjoyed creating scenery and costumes with lots of help from her friends at the church. When she retired from this position, an academic scholarship fund was established in her name. For many years, Mary was a coordinator for the area CROP walk to end hunger and was an active member of the Association of American University Women. She also enjoyed her membership in various book clubs and bible study groups.
A celebration of Mary Ruth Hoffman's life will be held at a later time. Donations in her honor can be made to "The Mary Hoffman Scholarship Fund" for high school seniors the First Presbyterian Church, 6 Pulteney Square, Bath, New York 14810.
Arrangements are being handled by Bond-Davis Funeral Home of Bath.
