Paul Eldon Preston

Avoca - On March 7th, 2022, Paul Eldon Preston of Avoca, passed away surrounded by his loving family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Paul is survived by his wife, Lucille Preston; his children, Theresa (Ronald) Dyer, Christine (Robert) Lafler; his grandchildren, Heather (Joseph) Capluzzi, Shawn Lafler, Melissa (Gregory) Houck; his great grandchildren, Alyssa (Brendan Cummings) Capluzzi, Lauren (Kody Rowland) Capluzzi, Jacob Houck, Sierra Lafler, and Emma Houck; and just recently blessed with his great great grandson, Eason Matthew Capluzzi. Paul is also survived by his loving sister, Marjorie (Robert) Homokay and other loving family and friends too numerous to count. He was preceded in death by his father, Eldon Preston and his mother, Linda (Preston) Zeh and step father, Ralph Zeh. He was also predeceased by his siblings Virginia (Donald) Francis and Fred Zeh.

Paul was born in Avoca, NY on October 15th, 1934 to Linda and Eldon Preston. He attended Cohocton and Jasper Schools. He enlisted in the Air Force (1954-1957) and proudly served in Japan during the Korean War. He also served in the Reserves from 1957-1962. After his time in the service, he worked at W.W. Babcock Ladder Company for 40 plus years, where he invented the Preston ladder. He was also an officer for the Allegany-Steuben Affiliate #72 for the New York State Cosmetology Association. Also, for 42 years he was caretaker for the Greenville Cemetery.

Paul married Lucille (Rook) October 26th, 1957 and they enjoyed their life together for 64 years. They enjoyed: watching the Buffalo Bills, spectating at Nascar and Woodhull Races, attending the Continental School of Beauty (which he graduated from), helping out at the Steam Pageant Association every summer (which he was a lifetime member of), worshiping God at their local church, and donating their time at the food bank together.

Paul enjoyed the simple things in life like lunch at Burger King, clipping coupons from the Sunday newspapers, polka parties on RFD, wrestling on tv and telling jokes followed by hearty laughs. Other than his time in the military and the life he built with his family, he was proud of his time as Parade Captain of the Avoca Fire Department in which they won several awards.

A Celebration of Life service for Paul is scheduled for Saturday, April 23rd at 2:00PM at Harvest Baptist Church. It will be immediately followed by a fellowship meal at the church. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his name to Harvest Baptist Church, 7568 Route 54, Bath, NY 14810 or any veteran charity of your choice.
