Q: Dear Pastor,
What does the Bible say about pornography?
A: The exact word is not found in scripture. But don’t think for a second that mankind didn’t fashion for itself numerous outlets for perversions, fetishes and sexual exploits, even in the proverbial Stone Age. The Bible records exhaustive examples of pornography which fit its definition of “sexually explicit items whose purpose is to elicit sexual arousal” (according to Dictionary.com.)
Pornographic objects and practices are mentioned in the Bible under names like Asherim and Asherah or “the groves,” where these sexually-charged statuary were lined up in groups and stood sentinel to licentious orgies of pagan worship. Whole religions were formed around these idols - even the wise King Solomon was fatefully seduced by the potency of the devil’s siege on human sexuality. Solomon married hundreds of women who regularly worshiped at these altars of perversion. He ignored God’s guidelines about women, as well as, the repeated warnings from his father, King David, who knew a thing or two about sexual sin.
Sanctioned sexual perversion toppled any nation affiliated with it in the Bible (note to America), and it took numerous Godly kings to remove its generational ruin: “The [righteous] king proceeded to make a clean sweep of all the sex-and-religion shrines that had proliferated east of Jerusalem on the south slope of Abomination Hill, the ones Solomon king of Israel had built to the obscene Sidonian sex goddess Ashtoreth, to Chemosh the dirty-old-god of the Moabites, and to Milcom the depraved god of the Ammonites. He tore apart the altars, chopped down the phallic Asherah-poles, and scattered old bones over the sites. Next, he took care of the altar at the shrine in Bethel that Jeroboam son of Nebat had built - the same Jeroboam who had led Israel into a life of sin. He tore apart the altar, burned down the shrine leaving it in ashes, and then lit fire to the phallic Asherah-pole” (2 Kings 23:13, MSG).
Ever since humans exited the Garden of Eden in a fallen state, we’ve crafted a kaleidoscope of sinful behaviors designed to satisfy any appetite. Sex is the devil’s favorite of the fleshly sins because it is the means by which human beings are reproduced. Procreation is a particular threat to the demonic kingdom since we are the only species created in the image of Almighty God according to Genesis 1:27. So, it behooves Satan to attack our sexual sanctity - and he is relentless. Generation after generation, the devil repackages and sells the same forbidden sex-practices God spoke about to Moses: homosexuality, incest, human trafficking and predatory abuses toward children and beasts. Even the activities of the marriage bed, described in Scripture as a holy place of undefiled passion, are now filmed for entertainment by Hollywood husbands and wives. Our young women and men are then encouraged to earn fame as porn-stars.
Pornography’s root system of idolatry, immorality and perversion is as old as the human race. It has always been considered by God to be a great evil and this status has never changed. As believers and followers of Christ, we must make intentional, unyielding efforts to guard our intimate territories. While we may not be able to control every dark thought, we may surely control what we do with it. Choose Christ, choose life, choose purity and integrity. The battle is ancient, but through Jesus, the victory is ours.
